 Said differently……Keep it SHORT.  

The LESS you say, the more accurate a real psychic or medium will become.  Why?  Because genuine psychic abilities, and therefore….genuine psychic professionals do NOT want you to say much of anything at all.  They want to listen to your concerns, and address your issues in a way that does NOT require a lot of input, insight or feedback from the caller or client.

The truth is, this is the primary reason that most GOOD psychics and mediums will caution you to keep your answers as close to “Yes” or “No” as possible, and will actually cut you off if you start to reveal too much detail.

Filed Under”  The Benefits of “Blind” Readings

This is controversial to some, but to those of us who have been around the psychic industry for any length of time, it’s a well known truism.  The BEST psychics and mediums work “blind”.  They don’t want to see you face to face, and don’t want anything that can possibly “pollute” the reading to come through via ordinary means. 

For this reason, the best true psychics will work either via phone, (the best blinding mechanism there is) or via some sort of screen, filter or curtain if the reading is done in person….without ever setting sight on the sitter (or client) until the reading is done.

Why?  For the obvious reason that it’s much more difficult to explain away real “hits” as cold reading or good guesses when you can’t visually see the person who is being read.  It’s also much better for the CONFIDENCE of the client as well…..as you won’t worry after the reading about how much you “gave away” through body language, or your physical appearance, or through unconscious mannerisms that give of clues during the session.

Ironically, while many people think that the best psychics ONLY work face to face and don’t use the phone….the reality is actually the complete opposite.  (And the real reason that most scientific studies of psychics and mediums are done completely blind, usually only by phone and never in a setting where psychic and client can see each other at all)

The biggest sign a psychic is FAKE?

A reader who fishes for answers, asks long detailed questions, or is overly insistent that they are RIGHT, even when you insist they’re not, is a huge turn off, and professionally, as a writer and paranormal researcher for many years….something I’ve learned is a huge red flag as well.

The funny thing?

Trusting your own intuition, and going with your gut is often the very BEST barometer for trusting people you meet in any walk of life.

And when it comes to folks who have the gift of enhanced intuition?  Strangely,  in my experience, it is even more of an asset here than anywhere else….and when your gut is telling you someone is GENUINE, it’s a really good sign you are about to  experience something really good.

(and of course, the reverse is equally true as well)

Do you do anything specific or special before you reach out…..or do you just dial up the phone and let the reading flow and go where it wants?

Do you have an agenda or a certain set of needs that MUST be met….or do you just like to get entertaining and enlightening information and consider that “good enough”?

The truth?  As someone with 20 years of experience with psychic readings, both personally and professionally alike, I can tell you that there IS in fact an art, and a science to successful psychic readings.  And while many readers won’t tell you what it is in advance…….learning HOW to ask the right kind of questions is as important and picking the right psychic or medium in the first place.

The good news?

If you are calling a reader by phone, you have some very distinct advantages over those that prefer to get their readings in person, most specifically……it’s much harder for the psychic to “cheat”.  Not that most do of course, but even unconsciously, human nature is such that information “leaks” face to face that colors a reading that does NOT happen by phone.

What you look like, how old you are, what kind of car you pulled up in, whether you have a wedding ring on, what sort of clothes you are wearing and all those sorts of seemingly SMALL details can be very influential, even unintentionally, on your reader, and your reading as a result.  (and all honest psychics will tell you this, which is why the vast majority of world class readers do MOST of their best work on the phone)

In my view, there are about 5 critical components that every new client should learn before calling a new psychic, or getting a reinforcement reading with someone they already know and like.

In the interest of the space I have available here, I’m going to share 2 of the most important ones for me, and I’ll quickly explain why they help ME get the most out of every reading I get as well.  (both for personal and professional purposes alike)

- Document, Detail and Describe Your Dillema

Honestly, I prefer to keep it closer to 5…..but definitely no more than 7.  Make sure these are the types of questions that clarity will help you improve the current quality of your life.

Then, write down your ideal resolution to each.  In other words, you not only want to write down what you really need to know, you also should visualize and communicate on paper how you’d like each situation or set of circumstances to resolve itself in the most favorable way for YOU as well.  (the reasons for this are a bit too detailed to cover here……..but the obvious one is you want to align your intentions with outcomes you can visualize and that are put out to the “universe” as well)

My definition of a successful reading?  If I can get good, detailed and insightful guidance on at least HALF of the questions (or conflicts) I had written down before the call.  (a GREAT reading is when you get amazing answers to ALL of your questions….but that happens very rarely!)

- Acknowledge Your Inner “Assertive” Self

This is hugely important with all types of readings, but for phone readings, I find it’s even more important.  You want to CONTROL the tone, tempo and flow of the reading, and you don’t want to give that up to the reader, even if they are on a great roll.  The truth is, it took me years to learn how to “steer” a reading in the direction that was most important to ME, and not let a psychic or medium just go off in the area that they wanted to, while I sat there in silence.

Remember, it’s YOUR life, and your money and YOUR time on the phone.  Writing down what you want to know in advance, visualizing the sort of outcomes you want, and then making sure that you are assertive in keeping the psychic focused on YOUR issues is critical to getting the most out of each and every reading….no different than if you were seeing any other highly gifted professional.

The real world comparison I like to make for those NOT familiar with how a good psychic reading works?

If you went to your family doctor with a cold that was driving you nuts and keeping you out of work and home in bed ….and all he wanted to do was talk about your  bad diet, or a foot problem…….or anything that he thought was more important, at some point you’d speak up and say – “okay, doc…..but I really came in because this COLD is driving me crazy” right?  It may sound silly……but the very SAME thing applies to getting life advice from a gifted intuitive as well!

If you take famous psychic medium John Edwards word for it…..the truth is, YES  

In my own experience with people of all types and stripes, just about everybody has some sort of latent psychic or intuitive ability that we don’t use unless we exercise it, just like any other muscle.   ARe some people more naturally gifted than others?  Of course….and much like some are born with great artistic or athletic gifts, the same is true when it comes to more estoteric skills like those that makes mediums, clairvoyants or other gifted professionals seem special.

As someone who has been writing about, and researching psychic phenomena for many, many years…..I have NEVER seen such an avalanche of interest in the field as right now. Why? Because with so much TV and media attention being focused on celebrity psychics and the paranormal experiences of famous people overall, “average” folks around the globe are much more interested in learning more as well.

I really like Theresa Caputo, for example…..but you have to remember that most psychics and mediums don’t work with a TV camera filming, editing and choosing what to show, and what not to show. Therefore….while TV shows that feature the famous psychics and mediums are helpful to understanding the process of what happens during a reading, they are a bit embellished for entertainment purposes as well.

In other words, it’s critically important to understand that a GENUINE psychic experience, even with the most gifted intuitive in the world is not a made for TV type of experience! Actually….it’s more exciting, more exhilarating and more “human” than what we see on TV, and while shows like the “Long Island Medium” are very helpful for showing what’s possible, the genuine “article” is often a much richer and more rewarding interaction overall. (and in my view….a much BETTER experience as well!)

There must be some psychics who are “on” 100% of  the time, right?

No, actually in MY experience, this is 100% wrong!  As a matter of fact, one of the first and most clear cut signs to me that a reader is NOT going to be real, is if they publish a percentage of how accurate they are.  The truth?  Most good psychics and mediums and really any INTUITIVE professional who works with subtle energies is on some days…and off the others.  As a matter of fact, even a reader who is consistent with their own clairvoyance has a whole other issue to deal with while doing a reading.

YOU!  Your energy, your openness, and your emotional availability to the reading is a proven part of the process of getting “hits” versus “misses”.  This is called “the experimental effect” in science, and it has been PROVEN to be a significant factor in scientific studies of some of the very best psychics and mediums in the world.

How so?

In a famous study done by world renowned Dr. Richard Wiseman, a well known “skeptic” of psychic abilities, and Dr. Marilyn Schlitz, an equally well known proponent and advocate of psychic and intuitive abilities, the remarkable results of their WELL publicized study was SHOCKING and well documented:

It often comes through in symbols, or flickering images, or in light sounds and sights that they have to filter, interpret and then communicate to YOU for your review.

When I saw the famous Jon Edward in person, he said it was akin to standing outside of a heavy glass window and having a conversation.

You can only hear and see so much of the other person, and it often sound muffled and unclear depending on the connection.

So there you have it!  In 20 years of psychic research, experimentation, writing, reporting and more readings than I can count, I’ve had hundreds of amazing life changing experiences.  But I’ve rarely, and only on a few occasions,  have had a reading that was 100% “right” in every way, and nor would I, or should you, expect that today…..unless of course, you have an amazing connection with the psychic right away!  (which does happen quite often as well)

Are all affordable or budget priced readers LESS skilled or gifted than those who charge premium prices?  Is it a waste of time to use a psychic or medium who charges less than $100 bucks?  And what about psychics that advertise themselves as 100% free?  Are they the real deal……or a simple scam you must avoid at all costs?

The “right” price for psychic readings is a pretty controversial area.  Some believe that if a psychic charges anything at all…..it’s not right.  Others understand the dedication and committment a TRUE reader applies to his or her craft, and are fine paying premium prices for an amazing reading.

In my view?  You’ve got to be willing to experiment to find the right reader for YOU, regardless of price.  I’ve had terrible readings with high priced celebrity style readers….and amazing readings with low cost, but highly gifted psychics and intuitive’s that most have never heard of.

In the strangest of celebrity psychic stories, George Clooney reportedly went to a psychic to communicate with his potbellied pig George, who died in 2006. Writing about Psychic Hotlines and psychic networksfor a living…..you would think we would have had the opportunity to mention the psychic friends network at some point in the recent past…..but to be honest with you, I FORGOT they were even still around..:-)

The truth is, The Psychic Friends Network has had their share of credibility problems in the past, and apparently, some financial ones as well.  And while I haven’t reviewed their psychics or their services to be able to recommend them (which we probably wouldn’t for quite a while EVEN if we did and were impressed) the good news for them is, acccording to a press release about some major funding that just came across the wire, they are going to be around for the forseeable future as well!  (no pun intended..;-)

Psychic Friends Network Receives $500k Investment – Yahoo! Finance

This is our second quick Sylvia Browne post of the week…and I promise, it will be MY last..:-) 
We’ve gotten a few questions by email, and a few angry responses to what was posted a few days ago about our thoughts that Sylvia is NOT really psychic, and does the whole industry a dis-service by offering up UBER EXPENSIVE readings that are often vague, general and simply dubious and disappointing for my taste as well.

Someone asked – do you REALLY know how much Sylvia Browne charges for a reading?

Yes, as a matter of fact, if you check some of her published rates they can be upwards of $1000 per session, and many of the sites that reference her readings refer to $700 fees and up to speak to her by phone.  (see below for a much more scathing review of some of her well documented misses and psychic predictions that are loony, loopy and have NOT come true)

Personally, I don’t think of her much, but some of our readers sure seem too….and they get upset whenever something NOT flattering is published.  The good news is, if you really like, her…..continue to listen to what she has to say.  For those that think Sylvia Browne is NOT really psychic (people like ME, for example) I’m much happier speaking to psychics, mediums, and intuitive’s that I like, trust and believe in 100%.
